James Brown was a HUGE figure in the evolution of funk. And with funk being so reliant on the groove and therefore, the drums, his drummers were a huge part of the evolution of funk.
James Brown was notoriously harsh on his musicians with rumours of musicians being fined if they made a mistake on stage. He also often had more than one drummer on stage and stories of one drummer being told to stop if they weren’t cutting it and the other drummer being instructed to take over are common. So there was a pressure on those drummers which required some solid groovers to be able to handle it.
Two of James Brown’s most prominent drummers were Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks.
These drummers came up with some of the best loved James Brown drum beats and if you want to be a funk drummer you have a duty to check these guys out. So let’s do it.
