Learn a street samba drum groove

This is a street Samba drum beat adapted for the drum kit. The Samba is a rhythm type from Brazil which is lively, infectious and often seen at carnivals making people dance. Usually this rhythm is performed by the bateria which is a large group of percussionists that play on a drum or other percussion instrument each.

These can range from drums to shakers, whistles, tambourines and scrapers. The collective sound is very powerful.

So here we are going to try and replicate that street samba drum sound using just us on a drum kit. To have any chance of replicating the sound made by many people we must use all four limbs. That enables us to play four separate rhythms and create a thicker sound.

Of course it does mean that this is a four limb independence challenge.

So here we will use the same foot ostinato that you can find in the basic jazz samba drum beat and the advanced street samba drum beat but we will be filling in all of those 16th note snares. We will then use specific accents to create the recognised street samba drum sound.

Once you get comfortable with this you can start to improvise more with the left hand and create very exciting, less predictable rhythms.

But first you must learn this set pattern so you have a strong foundation.
