This Is The Soul Man Drum Notation
Welcome to the Soul Man Drum Notation. Soul Man is the classic soul tune sung by Sam and Dave on the Stax record label.
It was released in 1967 and features the Stax house band ‘Booker T and the MGs’ with Al Jackson Jr on drums.
Soul Man actually features quite a funky drum beat and then, in typical Al Jackson style, doesn’t veer too much from the main groove. It also has a straighter bass drum pattern in the chorus which can be deceptively hard to execute consistently.
There are also a few nice ruff based pick up fills that are fun to get tight.
