Learn a simple three four drum beat
This three four drum beat is easy & gets you started in odd time immedaitely
This simple three four drum beat video lesson will get you started right away by breaking a few things down. When we talk about odd time we often think about the less common time signatures such as seven eight, five four, eleven sixteen and so on. But three four is actually pretty common and whereas eleven sixteen will probably never be required unless you play for a pretty progressive band, three four will almost definitely crop up at some point in your drumming life.
Therefore this is an essential time signature to master. Let’s break it down. The most common time signature is four four and this means there are four quarter notes in a bar. Three four means there are three quarter notes in a bar. So it’s simply one less beat than are normal time signature.
So in concept it’s pretty simple, and actually playing it isn’t too hard either. But getting really comfortable and being able to improvise within it does take some practice.
Our first decision is whether we play quarter, eight or sixteenth note hi-hats. We then need to decide where to put that snare drum backbeat. Possibly the most natural placement for that is beat three and that’s what we’re doing in the example below.
Once you get comfortable with that most basic pattern you can start to explore different hi-hat options, embellish the snare drum with ghost notes or different placements and start getting creative on the bass drum.
