A nine eight drum beat is NOT scary and with practice it can become as simple as playing in four four time (also known as common time).
Nine eight time means that there are nine eighth notes in a bar.
Think about it for a moment: in four four we have four quarter notes. A quarter note last for one beat. If you split one beat in half you have two eight notes which last for half a beat each. Therefore there are eight eighth notes in a bar of four four.
So nine eight time simply has one more eighth note than our favourite four four time. That’s not so scary is it?
