 Which Roland drums to buy

When you buy Roland drums you are buying the best electronic drums on the market. As a result they don’t come cheap so you may be considering a second hand model. Because of their great build quality the second hand kits are often in great condition but after you watch the video below you might want to make sure you buy a model with the time check feature.

If you want a great practice kit with the latest technology then you might want to check out the Roland TD17 range released in 2018.

People know that I love Roland drums so they often ask me what is the best Roland drum module. My answer is often dictated by the available budget but whatever the price point I always recommend they get a version with time check because it is such a great tool for improving timing on the drums.

What is time check?

Many of the Roland drums have this feature in their ‘coach’ section. It’s a very simple but super effective tool to improve your timing when playing with a metronome. If you haven’t mastered that skill yet you might want to check out the beginner guide to playing with a metronome.

But assuming you’re all good, time check gives you a metronome for a preset length. If you set it to eight measures then it will actually play ten because you get a two bar count in. You simply have to play along with it.

It will measure how accurate the timing on your kick (bass drum) and snare is and then give you a percentage score at the end. The name of the game is consistency because you might hit 100% at times but if some of your bars fall out of time then your overall score will be lower.

As you play you will get a visual display of the accuracy on the screen. You can see in real time where your kick and snares are so if you’re slightly ahead make sure you slow down to get the markers in the middle section. If you’re behind make sure you speed up to get back in the middle.

It really makes you focus on your timing in a deep way and I’ve watched it transform the timing of many students.

So watch this video below for a demonstration on the Roland drums time check feature. If you want to take your timing to the next level you can also access a FREE timing course lower down on this page.
