Quintuplet fill over sextuplets

Quintuplet fill over sextuplets

Create a five over six with this quintuplet fill

This quintuplet fill involves playing the five note phrasing over sextuplets (16th note triplets). Why on earth would you do that?

Well, why not! But let’s face it, 90% of the time it is totally fine to phrase our fills within the chosen rate. So moving around the kit in groups of four when playing in sixteenth notes. Or moving around the kit in groups of six when playing in sextuplets.

BUT sometimes that’s a little too predictable and it’s more interesting and fun to move at a different rate to our chosen subdivision. So this quintuplet fill is actually played over a 16th note triplet which means you are playing five note phrases against the six note subdivision.

Still with me? Ok good.

To stress that phrasing we are accenting the first note of each five note phrase. That means that the accent moves each time within the sextuplet phrasing so accent one is on beat one. But then accent two is on the sixth beat of the first sextuplet. And then accent three is on the fourth beat of the second sextuplet…and so on.

The listener won’t necessarily have time to figure out what you’ve done but their subconscious will be aware that something different has occurred and that will be exciting. This also adds interest to your band members who will either freak out and lose their place within the bar or totally dig it and potentially start adding their own interesting syncopation. But when we only do this kind of thing for one bar it shouldn’t mess the other band members up too much because by the time they’ve realised something is happening you will have returned to the regular groove and all is well again.

Let’s get cracking then. Download the free sheet music here and watch the video below.

I hope you enjoyed this lesson and had fun with the concept. You could try your own interesting phrasing to create a poly rhythmic feel. Maybe phrase in fours over triplets, or in threes over sixteenth notes for example.
