I’m Craig Lerwill I’ve been playing drums for nearly 40 years. I was drawn to the drums at a young age after first hearing bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep purple, Queen and the police.

 

Since then I have been influenced by many drummers and styles over the years. including funk, blues, jazz, Brazilian, and afro cuban. I played my first professional gig at the age of fifteen at a local underage nightclub.

 

At age 19 I played briefly in popular New Zealand  blues band Chicago Smoke Shop. Since then I have played around the Wellington music scene in many different bands including both original and cover bands. I am Currently playing live and recording with a mod themed band “The Numbers” who have recently produced some notable recordings for Deltaphonic records.

 

Apart from a brief period in my twenties where I took lessons from Bud Jones (Drum tutor at Wellington Conservatory at the time) I have been mostly self taught.

 

This would not be the road I would take if I had to do it all again. Why?  

Having acquired a vast amount of knowledge and experience in all things drumming related over the years, I believe it is my duty to pass some of that on.

 

In a music world that seems to be dominated by manufactured auto-tuned and quantized pop music, there are still many artists out there. It’s my job to pass on that passion and skill set to anyone who may have a yearning to create real music on the the most fun instrument ever invented.
