Welcome to the New Orleans drumming lesson. Here we will learn how to play funky second line drum beats.
Second line drumming comes from New Orleans and the name relates to the lively parades that take place for various occasions such as Mardi Gras, community events and even funerals.
They are colourful occasions often with amazing costumes, music and dancing.
The first line consists of the main ingredients of the parade, such as the casket at a funeral, the family members and the musicians. The second line consists of the crowd of people that follow along.
The second line style drum beats often have a slight swing to them which makes them very groovy and funky. When we adapt these to drumkit there is often the challenge of syncopation between the limbs but the result is some really interesting drum beats.
Once you get the hang of them, they are a lot of fun to play. In this lesson we break it down to a very simple level and then build it up limb by limb.
