Set up fills are a common rhythmic device to making a band hit or ensemble stab more impactful.
This might be a big note in a big band piece where every instrument hits a figure together to create a huge accented note.
Rather than that note appearing out of nowhere, the drummer might set it up with a drum fill that leads into it.
You could create all sorts of drum set up fills but the one in this lesson is probably the most common.
It is found in Big Band but it’s also very useful for rock music and everything in between.
In fact the fill is just a really cool drum fill to use anywhere even if you’re not setting up a band figure.
