Welcome to the jazz drums 101 course. This will take you from complete beginner to someone who can play jazz to a level good enough to jam with a band, play along with jazz backing tracks and enhance your listening experience of jazz.
For the many drummers who develop in the world of pop, rock, funk or pretty much any other style, jazz drumming can feel totally alien and back to front. For a start, when you play jazz drums the groove is driven by your right hand and left foot whereas in rock it’s the left hand and right foot. It’s the opposite limbs!
But it also takes some getting used to when we remove the back beat. Jazz drummers don’t use that consistent snare backbeat to power the song.
So it’s physically different as well as a different mental approach. And that’s what needs to be broken down in order to play jazz drums.
