How To Play The Black Velvet Drum Beat
Welcome to this drum lesson where we will learn how to play the Black Velvet drum beat.
Black Velvet was released in 1988 by Canadian singer Alannah Myles with Jorn Andersen on drums.
It is primarily a standard shuffle drum beat with a twist. In this drum lesson we break down the basic shuffle drum pattern but we also discuss the theory behind that ‘twist’. What I’m referring to is the instantly recognisable hi-hat accent pattern which gives us a quarter note triplet feel.
It’s a simple thing to do on a technical level but it really adds something very interesting to the drum beat. I believe we should understand the theory behind the drum beats that we play but if you want to skip past that you can just watch the break down of the drum beat.

Not a musician, but I raised one & he educated my ear. I recognised something special about the black velvet bass & beat and had to find out what! That Eb bass & twist on the hihat must be it…what magic
Yes Zelene. Quite subtle but it does create the magic!
