Learn how to use a click
Let’s learn how a metronome is used.
As a drummer it is crucial to learn how to play with a metronome
To understand how a metronome is used it is important to understand why we use one. A metronome is often called a click in modern music. We use a metronome because timing is an essential skill for any drummer at any level. You can have the fastest chops known to mankind but if you can’t play in time then you are no good to anyone.
This is the number one most important skill that a drummer should have!
How a metronome works
A metronome is a device which produces a perfectly evenly timed sound. It is far more accurate than a human naturally is. The most common note value to set on a metronome is a quarter note (or crotchet). This note lasts for one beat.
By learning to play in time with a metronome we are learning to play as close to this mechanical perfection of timing as possible. As a human we will never actually be quite as perfect but that’s OK.
The aim is to develop our timing to the point where it is close enough to perfection that a human ear cannot detect any differences in timing. And in fact, using recording software we can see a visual representation of our timing and really drill deep to get it as close as possible.
How a metronome is used
OK, we know what we’re aiming for with the metronome so let’s look at how we achieve that. In its most basic form the key exercises are very simple. First we should just train our ear and learn to play a single note in time with each click.
From there we can play eighth notes or sixteenth notes so that we are playing two or four notes to every click.
Once that is comfortable we can move on to the drum kit and play basic rhythms. Once that foundation is set we spend the rest of our lives learning to play freely with the metronome until it becomes second nature.
