Hip Hop Drumless Playalong Track
A Hip Hop drumless playalong – minus drums
Welcome to a cool hip hop drumless playalong track. It’s called Hippadippadoppa and it’s got a nice laid back hip hop style groove to it so this is more about feel than your craziest drumming chops.
Hip hop as a genre often uses programmed drum parts but historically it used samples from funk drummers from the 1960s. It carries some connections with drum and bass and jungle so you may want to check out this drum and bass playalong too. The main difference rhythmically is that drum and bass is generally fast whereas hip hop is often slower. But just like drum and bass, hip hop artists often sample those old funk records with two of the most commonly sampled drum breaks of all time coming from the Amen Break from Amen Brother by The Winstons with Gregory Coleman on drums as well as the Funky Drummer by James Brown with Clyde Stubblefield on drums. These drum parts are essential listening for drummers in my opinion.
This hip hop drumless playalong has a very laid back feel. Here you could try experimenting with playing behind the beat. This is an advanced time technique that creates a super laid back vibe. Playing right on top of the metronome is our first goal as drummers but once you get comfortable with that you can start manipulating time to create different feels.
Another aspect of the suggested groove for this track is the one handed sixteenth hi-hat pattern. The tempo for the song is fairly slow at 75bpm but it is still a challenge to maintain sixteenth notes throughout with one hand and harder still to make it feel relaxed. Keep an eye on your technique, use the fingers, stay relaxed and avoid going stiff.
So let’s check out a snippet with me playing on it and if you like it you can grab the track for yourself. You’ll also get a chart with it to print off to make learning the structure easy.
By the way, if you record yourself playing the track, post a link in the comments so I can see it. It helps me and other readers get new inspiration from your ideas and also you can get some feedback. Drummers are a supportive bunch so you won’t get any of that trolling nonsense you get elsewhere.
p.s. that’s me below doing my best impression of a badass hiphop gangsta type person. Scary eh?
