Welcome to the flams in fills lesson. Here we will learn how to use the flam rudiment in drum fills.
In the drum lesson below we are going to break down eight fills that use flams in different ways.
Flams are a very powerful rudiment and, although you can play them in any genre, these drum fills sound especially effective in a rock setting.
A great example of using flams in fills is the opening drum fill that Dave Grohl provides in Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. He busts out four big flams with bass drums and hi-hats between them. You can find full sheet music for that lesson here.
But there are great examples in all genres across hundreds of songs because it’s such a versatile and useable rudiment.
So hopefully you are familiar with the flam as a rudiment so it won’t be a huge step to start implementing it in fills.
This drum lesson places them on different sound sources as well as using different subdivisions. This opens up a huge number of possibilities to create different drum fill variations.
