It often seems confusing when playing drums in odd time signatures but it doesn’t need to be. We are just dealing with a different length of bar and we need to learn how to count it.
Once we can count it we then need to decide how to construct a groove inside that bar.
When we play in four four time signature it is easy to split it evenly and naturally play the back beats on beats two and four.
But in odd time the snare placement is not so obvious and that can really trip people up.
