This cool drum fill is honestly really, really easy. BUT it takes work to make it sound good. That is the case for almost everything on the drums. It is all easy if we break it down and slow it down enough. Sorry but that’s a fact and you’ve probably heard me banging on about it plenty of times before.
So to a large extent great drummers are simply the guys and gals with enough patience and enough determination to go through that learning process when others lose interest and go off to play the Xbox! If you want it enough you will trust the process and put the work in. And then you will get the rewards.
So what have we got here?
This fill is largely linear based except for when you execute the hi-hat ‘barks’ which involve a hi-hat opening along with a bass drum. It is all hand to hand so you need your single stroke roll rudiment to a high level. It also involves some cross overs as you move around the kit. This can create great visual interest but does require some time working out the logistics and movements of this.
But as I say, work it up slowly and don’t jump up in large increments of speed. Take it up slowly ensuring that the 16th notes are even all the way. Then it really will sound like a cool drum fill rather than a drum kit falling down the stairs.
