Drummer Timing Exercise No. 1

Drummer Timing Exercise No. 1

Try this drummer timing exercise to develop your internal metronome

This Is The Drummer Timing Exercise No. 1

Why is this drummer timing exercise important? Well I think you’ll agree that being able to play with a metronome is an essential skill for the modern drummer. And most of us start learning this skill early in our development today which wasn’t the case in the past.

However, if we’re not careful we become too dependent on the click turned up loud hammering in our ear and this mean that we have lost the ability to use our own natural timing. The exercise below will make sure that you have amazing natural timing as well as being able to play to a mechanical click.

The drummer timing exercise no. 1 is a great practice idea to help develop your internal metronome. Your internal metronome is a common way to describe your ability to stay in time naturally without a mechanical metronome keeping you there. Although al lot of studio drumming, and an increasing amount of live drumming, is performed with a metronome, it is still crucial to be able to hold good time without a metronome playing.

I know from personal experience that we can get so used to playing with a click that we actually lose confidence in our own ability to stay in time. I reached that point and had to actively work on my internal metronome to get it back and rebuild confidence.

If our internal metronome is solid then we can branch off into fills, solos, metric modulation and any other crazy ideas we have but we still have an innate sense of where the pulse is.

So let’s develop it right now. The video lesson below explains a very simple but effective exercise that you can start working on straight away.
