The drum solo challenge is a great exercise that works for any level of drummer whether beginner or expert. It’s called the drum solo challenge but you set how hard you want the challenge to be.
Here we are learning how to create a drum solo around ensemble stabs or band figures. By that I mean that the band are playing a phrase and you fill in the gaps between those phrases whilst also choosing how to connect with those band figures.
It’s a fun way to solo and often it’s more interesting for the listener than just having a big empty space where the drummer plays something fast. The long standing joke is that when a drummer starts the solo everyone goes to the bar!
But when it’s a more interactive solo that involves the whole band it is much more exciting for the band and the audience.
You find these types of solos in fusion music commonly but you can find this idea in various forms in all styles. And once you are comfortable with them you can add little solo sections in any band that you’re in.
What is the drum solo challenge?
Here we will breakdown how we construct these solos starting with really simple exercises. We then move to playing the whole sequence and discuss how you can build on those ideas as you become more comfortable.
You get full sheet music with the phrases written out, as well as space to add your own ideas. You will also get a drumless backing track so you can start working on these ideas in a real musical context.
