Double paradiddle exercise

Double Paradiddle Exercise with Moving Bass Drums

A double paradiddle exercise to develop your drumming

This free double paradiddle exercise drum lesson is a great test of your independence control. I love anything that takes the humble old rudiments and creates a new challenging way to develop your drumming by using them.

If you are not familiar with the double paradiddle then you must first become familiar with it. It is similar to the standard paradiddle with the sticking:

R L R R L R L L

Except that the double paradiddle adds two more single notes before the doubles so we get:

R L R L R R L R L R L L

The result is a six note pattern so we often play these as a sixteenth note triplet (sextuplet).

The double paradiddle exercise below keeps it simple on the hands by just using that pattern on the snare played as sixteenth note triplets. But it is the bass drum pattern that makes this such a difficult drum exercise.

Here the bass drums change their rate each bar by adding a note between them. So at first they come in every other note, then every three notes, then every four notes, then every five notes and finally every six notes. This is hard! To be able to maintain solid double paradiddles with the hands whilst changing the rate of the bass drum is a really tough challenge.

But it’s a great exercise to develop your limb independence as well as your control to be able to improvise patterns around this basic rudiment. Once you become free with these rudiments you will unlock the door to creativity with those rudiments so this really helps towards that goal.

But as much as anything it’s just a great challenge that you should want to conquer in your quest to become the total drummer.

So let’s get going with the drum lesson!
