Do We Need Ghost Notes On Drums?
Welcome to the ghost note lesson where we break down ghost notes. What are they? How do we play them? When should we use them?
Ghost notes are the very soft notes that drummers play most commonly on the snare drum. We use them to create colour and texture in a groove which, ultimately, creates more complex drum beats. They work very well in funk although they can be used in any genre.
To use this properly you need to develop a good command of different dynamics so that you have real contrast between your accents (loud notes) and ghost notes (soft notes). If you want good examples of these grooves check out, just for one example, David Garibaldi’s playing with the American funk band Tower of Power.
This is just a quick lesson that introduces ghost notes on the drums and the technique needed to execute them properly.
