Funky Old Skool Drum Playalong Track
Drum Playalong for Practice
This is a totally free drum playalong track for you to practice your beats, fills and general creativity with. At Total Drummer there are several free drum playalong tracks for you to practice with as well as a large library of tracks for purchase on the playalongs page. The last three free backing tracks minus drums can be found here, here and here.
This is one of the most crucial and most fun ways to practice drums. We can sit around working on technique, sight reading, rudiments and exercise after exercise but if you can’t string it all together in a flowing, well timed drum part then it’s as useful as an underwater towel, or a chocolate tea pot, or a solar powered torch, or……you get the point!
Until you can use them in a creative and musical way they are just exercises for the practice room. The end goal should always be to add them to your drumming vocabulary so that you can enhance your playing and bring something special to the music.
So with that in mind this drum playalong has two main sections which gives you the chance to create two different grooves as well as practice transitioning between them with fills. But even more than that there is an ensemble stab section. That just means that the ensemble (or band) are hitting specific notes (or stabs) and you as a drummer need to choose how to interpret those. You could just play straight through them, you could groove but accent a few of them, you could solo and hit them all. If you decide to hit them you must choose how to hit them. Will you be subtle with a bass drum beneath the groove or will you go big with a set up fill and then an almighty crash on the stab? So many choices!
Have fun and play around with different ideas. Creativity is the key.
Here’s a video to give you a few starter ideas but don’t copy me. Come up with something event better. And help me out by recording it and posting a link to it in the comments section.
Now you’ve watched me make a mess all over the track it’s your turn!
