This is a drum lesson breaking down the buzz roll. This is an essential technique that is also know as the press roll. I see a lot of drummers that are great in so many ways on their instrument yet have never bothered to learn this fundamental technique.

It’s almost as if they think this is only used by marching band drummers

But actually this technique is essential no matter what style or context you play in. Yes this can be used to create that classic drum roll sound, but a buzz roll can also be broken down into smaller phrases and used within beats and fills within any genre of music.

You can see in the little intro snippet below that I am incorporating the technique in such a way to make interesting layered funk grooves. In this case I am just improvising some rough ideas to demonstrate that usage of the technique.

So that is why I strongly believe that the buzz roll is one of the essential drum techniques that every drummer should know!
