This is the blues shuffle drum course 101. It teaches you how to understand and count the blues shuffle by breaking it down developing the feel for this wide spread groove.
Such a huge proportion of music is swung and yet so many drummers who grow up listening to rock and pop can only play in straight time.
In fact, I remember performing as support for a blues artist who had recently disposed of a drummer that I had huge respect for having loved his playing with a very famous band (he will of course remain unnamed). When I asked about this replacement I was told that the other drummer just couldn’t play a shuffle.
I remember being shocked because I knew he was a great drummer but over the years I’ve seen this in so many other drummers who can play to a high standard but just can’t nail a shuffle.
Although this is called a blues shuffle drum course, the shuffle and other swung rhythms are by no means exclusive for blues and jazz. Shuffles appear in just about every genre so the feel and knowledge of this type of groove really is essential if you want to be a well rounded drummer.
So we will break it all down for total beginners of the shuffle and once we have that understanding we will build a vocabulary of essential blues shuffle grooves as well as a series of fills. Armed with these you can not only play a shuffle like a pro, but also add variety so you sound interesting. It gives you the freedom to improvise and groove rather than just holding on for dear life.
I’ve already mentioned that a shuffle is swung and that really is the bit that catches people out. It means instead of basing the groove on a straight, even eighth note feel we base it upon a triplet subdivision. In fact we play the first and third partial of the triplet leaving the middle note free. This is what creates that bouncy, uneven feel that is fundamental to the shuffle drum beat.
