What is the Best Floor Tom Mic?
Low tom microphone shoot out
This Is The Best Floor Tom Mic Comparison
So I hear you ask, “What is the Best Floor Tom Mic?”
Damn good question you are asking! In fact it’s so good that I thought I’d make a video to find out.
Ok so to be open with you, I’m not necessarily finding out THE best floor tom microphone. But I am testing five mics that can be used on floor toms and I’ve tried to make it as useful as possible.
So each mic is positioned the same distance from the drum head as much as possible, and pointing towards the centre of the drum.
The drum is identical for each mic in terms of the Remo clear Ambassador drum head, tuning, etc.
Every example is free from any processing so there is no EQ, reverb, gate or anything else. So what you are hearing is the raw sound from each microphone.
The mics you hear are:
- Karma condenser mic
- AKG D12 dynamic mic
- AKG C414 condenser mic
- Karma dynamic mic
- Sennheiser e604 condenser mic
So the Karma mics can’t be bought anymore but they are cheap and cheerful mics that achieve a surprisingly decent sound. The others you can find by clicking the text above and you will find the price varies largely.
Hopefully this serves as an interesting comparison. For me the big surprise was that I couldn’t hear the difference between the mics to necessarily justify the price of the £700 AKG C414 compared to the £40 (approx) Karma dynamic in this particular scenario.
Of course, the AKGs serve me really well for lots of used that the cheap one might not necessarily but this this particular purpose I wouldn’t necessarily rush out and spend that money for a floor tom mic when I could get pretty decent results at a fraction of the cost.
So if you don’t have the budget for super expensive microphones I would suggest that it should not hold you back from getting great recordings.
More emphasis should be placed on using a great drum with good drum heads, tuning them well, experimenting with mic positioning and then playing them well. Those aspects will affect your end result to a greater extent.
