Welcome to my Geneva drum lessons drum teacher profile (I also teach guitar). I am a drum and guitar teacher in Geneva, Illinois in the Fox Valley region.

I began developing my musical ear by taking piano lessons at 8 years old; however, that only lasted a couple years because I wanted to play music more in line with Chuck Berry, Elvis, Little Richard, etc. Soon I progressed to listening to Elton John, Bachman Turner Overdrive, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Van Halen, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. I started teaching myself drums at age 11; there were no drum set teachers where I grew up – only snare drum.

I began playing in jazz ensemble, concert band, and marching band in High School along with local garage bands. I initially went to college for engineering when I started to realize I had a good temperament for teaching when I was tutoring other students in math and physics. At this time, I started taking up the guitar because my drums would not fit in my dorm room! After two years I could not shake the music bug and switched to the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay to study music.

During this time, I played drums/percussion in symphonic band, percussion ensemble, African-Cuban percussion ensemble, and a touring show choir. In addition, I played drums/percussion for our musical productions of Jesus Christ SuperStar and West Side Story. After I completed my AAS, I transferred to the University of Wisconsin – Madison where I finished my B.S. in Kinesiology with a second major in Psychology/Motor Learning and Behavior.

I have played in a variety of original and cover bands over the years; however, I now focus mostly on teaching. I can teach Rock, Blues, Classic Metal, Afro-Cuban, Funk and Progressive Rock styles at the beginning and intermediate levels. I also like to emphasize early on, the importance of being a musician and not just a drummer. I like to get students to play songs while I play the guitar in order to keep things fun and get experience playing with other musicians as early as their development allows.

I especially encourage older folks that may have always wanted to learn drums, to take lessons; people are never too old to learn, and I have had great success in fostering beginning adult students.

Due to Covid -19, I am currently only teaching via Zoom, Facebook Messenger, etc. Hopefully in-person lessons can resume soon!
