Double Paradiddle Funk

Funky rudiment derived drum groove

Just in case you were thinking that rudiments were boring I’ve gotta tell you something. THEY ARE NOT! And this double paradiddle funk groove is here to prove it. I am a drum geek so I actually enjoy sitting with a pad and sticks playing rudiments in their purest form. But even if you’re not as sad as me you just need to realise that there are a million things we can use rudiments for to create really interesting drum grooves.

This very quick video does just that by using the humble double paradiddle. That is a paradiddle with two extra single notes stuck on the beginning. Easy!

The groove starts with two eighth notes and then the double paradiddle figure begins on beat two. Because the double paradiddle is a six note pattern, and we are playing it over sixteenth notes which are a four note grouping, it might feel strange at first. But stick with it because it’s crucial that we learn to play interesting groupings that fall across our standard groupings. You’ll get the hang of it if you start super slow.
