Learn the Chameleon Drum Beat

Here we are learning the Chameleon drum beat from the classic Herbie Hancock track. This features Harvey Mason on drums. It comes from the 1973 Headhunters album and was a cross over hit thanks to its jazz sensibilities intertwined with funk instrumentation and rhythms. And it really is that iconic funky bass line along with the syncopated drum beat that makes the greatest impression. When Harvey Mason comes in with the drums it features a lovely pushed back beat on the ‘a’ of beat one. It has some nice syncopated bass drums and the whole thing has a slightly swung 16ths feel. The song lasts for over fifteen minutes and this Chameleon drum beat that we are learning here drives most of that.
