Learn how to play a classic Tony Williams drum part
This Is The Cantaloupe Island Drum Lesson
Welcome to the Cantaloupe Island drum lesson where we will learn how to play Cantaloupe Island on the drums.
Cantaloupe Island was recorded for Herbie Hancock’s 1964 album called Empyrean Isles. It featured Ron Carter on bass, Freddie Hubbard on cornet and Tony WIlliams on drums.
It has became one of Herbie’s best loved and most enduring tunes and the drum parts are well worth studying. So that’s what we do here!
This is delivered so that even beginner drummers that have never studied jazz can enjoy it. We first break down the common song forms of jazz, and in particular, Cantaloupe Island. Once we know how the tune is structured we break down the key drum parts for each section.
We then bring it altogether for a performance through the whole track.
