This advanced samba drum beat is an extension of the basic street samba drum beat. It takes that pattern which was already quite a challenging four limb independence exercise and makes it even harder. But it’s worth it because the end result sounds great!

You probably already know that samba is a Brazilian rhythm which is usually played by lots of percussionists. From the mid-20th century drummers have been adapting these rhythms for the drum kit which enables one person to do the job of many. To create this thick layered rhythm we must put a lot of time in to coordinate those limbs and develop the necessary independence.

This is a very difficult variation of the more standard street samba drum beat.

Here we are adding a few things that takes the independence up to the next level. For starters the left foot is now playing splashed notes rather than all being closed ‘chick’ sounds. We also see the right hand play both open and muted notes on the floor tom to mimic the muted surdo notes from samba.

That’s why this is considered an advanced samba drum beat so you should only attempt this if you already have your basic samba to a good level.
