Learn a beginner seven eight drum beat
Here’s how to play drums in seven eight time signature
This Is The Seven Eight Drum Beat Lesson
Here we are breaking down a seven eight drum beat. We are stripping it back to it’s most basic level so this is for people who are new to seven eight drumming.
If you already feel comfortable in this time signature and want to try playing with a seven eight drumless backing track then click across to this fun track called Topiary Seven. It comes with a written chart to help you learn the structure and it includes some drum solo sections. It’s challenging but great fun!
But back to basics. The first thing to understand is that seven eight means there are seven eighth notes in a bar. If we compare that to the most common time signature of four four, we find four quarter notes in a bar. A quarter note lasts for one beat. An eighth note lasts for half a beat. Therefore there are two eighth notes in each quarter note. So if we have four quarter notes in a bar of four four, we can split them into eight eighth notes.
Sorry it’s mathsy but we need some basics maths in music so deal with it! But also think about what you just read. There are eight eighth notes in a bar of four four time signature.
In seven eight we have seven eighth notes so it’s just one eighth note less than four four. So that’s not so scary or weird is it? We’re just removing the last eighth note from a bar of four four. That’s the theory taken care of. Actually playing it is a little harder because most of us are so used to playing in four all the time. That means that seven won’t feel natural and you have to really concentrate to avoid falling back into four four.
The beat we’re looking at in the video is your most basic four four rock beat and we’ve simply chopped off the last hi-hat. That’s the one you normally count on beat ‘4&’.
