Drum and Bass Drumless Playalong

Drum and Bass Drumless Playalong Track

A drum and bass drumless playalong – minus drums

Here is a fun drum and bass drumless playalong track to help you practice those drum and bass grooves. At Total Drummer there are several free drum playalong tracks for you to practice with as well as a large library of tracks for purchase on the playalongs page. Some of the free backing tracks minus drums can be found here, here and here. These are also great fun so head over there for some great free drum content.

The track below is a premium drumless track which means you have to pay but fear not, it’s so cheap that it costs about the same as half a cup of coffee. And it’s definitely more fun than half a cup of coffee. I would say it’s better for you as well so it’s a win win!

And for that nominal fee you get both the drum and bass drumless MP3 backing track to jam along with as well as sheet music to follow. You can ignore the sheet music if you just want to jam but if you can read then this really helps to understand the structure of the piece. But either way, trying to follow the chart will build your reading skills whatever standard you’re at so print it out and give it a go.

This is one of the most crucial and most fun ways to practice drums. We can sit around working on technique, sight reading, rudiments and exercise after exercise but if you can’t string it all together in a flowing, well timed drum part then it’s as useful as an underwater towel, or a chocolate tea pot, or a solar powered torch, or……you get the point!

If you know drum and bass then you know the genre is pretty much created around one beat. It’s a basic eight beat with the second bass on the ‘&’ of beat three. Around this pattern you can bring in fun variations, displacements, ghost notes and more. And much of the genre was based around early funk drummers such as Clyde Stubblefield for James Brown. In fact two of the most sampled drum breaks ever were from that era and they are the Funky Drummer by James Brown with Clyde Stubblefield on drums and the Amen Break from Amen Brother by The Winstons with Gregory Coleman on drums. You should definitely check those two drum breaks out if you’re not already familiar with them.

But whether you play the basic pattern or get super complex with ghost notes and displacement, the big challenge is maintaining the tempo. At 180bpm this track requires good technique and a relaxed playing style to avoid stiffening up.

You can use ideas from those two tracks I just referenced, you can bring your own ideas and you can just have loads of fun. As well as the groove sections, the track is designed to have masses of solo/improvised drum sections to really get creative. You can just groove here, you could go into a mental solo, you could try some metric modulation. It’s open for you to explore whatever you want.

Check out some ideas that I laid down and then scroll down to grab the track so you can get busy with it.

If you come up with some cool ideas, help me out by recording it and posting a link to it in the comments section at the bottom of this page.

Now you’ve watched me create a mess all over it it’s your turn! Click below to grab the lesson.
