1970s UK Rock Drumming

Learn how to play the drum beats of Queen, Bowie and Free

This Is The 1970s UK Rock Drumming Course

Welcome to the 1970s UK rock drumming course. Here we will learn how to play the beats from Bowie, Queen and Free in the 1970s.

1970s rock was awesome. And it was vast so this is quite specifically UK 1970s rock part one. We’ve looked at 1960s rock with The Beatles, Cream and Jimi Hendrix. We’ve also looked at early heavy metal which could also be called late 60s/early 70s hard rock, and that included Led Zep, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.

So here we will tackle Queen, Free and David Bowie. Partly because I love all three and partly because I think they were all important to the decade and development of rock. And each had a very specific sound, instantly recognisable and still well loved fifty years later.

Rock as a genre was broadening now. Having emerged from rock and roll in the 1950s and developing with louder sounds and more risqué themes in the 60s, things niched down in the 70s. We had sub genres such as punk rock, hard rock, glam rock, soft rock, prog rock and art rock.

Queen and Bowie definitely had the flamboyant glam rock elements whereas Free were more of a straight ahead blues\rock group.
