Funk Drum Beat with Odd Groupings
This Is The Funk Drum Beat with Odd Groupings
This odd groupings funk drum beat video lesson helps us get a little Garibaldi in our lives. UK readers I don’t mean the Garibaldi biscuit, obviously although that is nice. I mean David Garibaldi of Tower of Power fame and one of my favourite funk drummers.
One thing I love about Garibaldi is the clever way he displaces beats and turns them on their head to create unpredictable and interesting grooves. The funk drum beat below teaches a method that helps us create crazy, displaced patterns within a recognisable framework. The framework here is one of 16th notes in a bar of four four. This is a very natural framework for many of us.
The problem is that we get stuck in a routine of playing everything within each quarter note beat. So we contain each phrase in four sixteenth notes. That is fine, and most of the time that works, but sometimes we need a way to break free from those predictable shackles.
When we have sixteen sixteenth notes in a bar there are so many mathematical possibilities for splitting up the groupings instead of four groups of four. So here we are going to use two groups of five and one group of six. That still adds up to sixteen but it forces us to place the accents somewhere other than the usual positions, such as snare on beats two and four.
And to make this easy we will use the same five note phrase for all of them, with the exception of the last group having an extra ghosted snare at the end to make it add up to six.
But I know that explaining it as written words is quite tricky to understand so scroll down and click the button to watch the full lesson and grab the free sheet music.
