Let's learn five really easy drum fills that sound amazing

Here we have five really easy drum fills that sound amazing. Yes it’s true they really are simple to learn but as always you must start slow, learn the pattern correctly and gradually speed the patterns up. Sometimes  when we see drummers that we admire it seems like they can play a million things in a million different ways and it can feel overwhelming. But many drummers have a few staple techniques and concepts that they love and they are very clever at recycling those ideas in different ways to make them sound new.

That might involve playing them at a different rate or over a different note value. It might involve taking them from straight notes to swung or vice versa. It might involve moving them to a different time signature. Or it might involve orchestrating them differently around the kit. That’s what were doing today.

So what have we got here?

These five really easy drum fills honestly are simple to learn and sound great. This whole lesson is based upon a simple pattern of three notes in which we play a right hand, a left hand and then a kick (bass) drum. Just three notes! Get comfortable looping this pattern with even notes.

Once you’re happy with this we will play them over 16th notes. Because we are using a three note pattern over 16th notes, which are grouped in fours, this creates an instantly interesting feel which is less predictable than moving around the kit in groups of four.

Then, when we’re comfortable with this concept, we can start to move the same pattern around the kit to create five different fills from one idea. And that’s just the start of it. Once you have mastered these examples you can then get to work cerating your own orchestrations to see how far you can take this.
